$5 Poetry Night with O, Miami
Apr 24 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
$5 Poetry Night with O, Miami @ Vizcaya Museum and Gardens | Miami | Florida | United States

O, Miami, WLRN, and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens present an evening to celebrate poetry in South Florida and the completion of the “Ode to Your Zip Code” (affectionately called Zipodes) contest.

Join all the Zipode finalist for a reading and reception at Vizcaya, overlooking Biscayne Bay.

“Ode to Your Zip Code” is a South Florida-wide poetry call created by WLRN and O, Miami, a Knight Foundation-funded poetry festival, that turns the least lyrical designation of one’s home, a zip code, into an occasion for poetry.

Beginning in March 2019, WLRN and O, Miami will accept odes to South Florida zip codes in the form of the code itself: five lines, with each line containing the number of words designated by the zip numbers.  (For example, if you live in 33139, your poem would be 3 words, 3 words, 1 word, 3 words, 9 words.)

Every Friday in April, WLRN will announce the top ten poems of the week. All forty poets are invited to read their Zip Odes at Vizcaya. Submit your own here. To submit your own original poems and find out more about the contest, visit the O Miami website. Submissions are due by April 19.

Additionally, to round out the evening, O, Miami and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center will award the 2019 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Poetry Award. A brief ceremony and reading will kick off Zipodes.

Light Bites will be provided by Dade County Food Group. Beers compliments of Concrete Beach Brewery.

TEDx Coconut Grove Live @ Vizcaya Village

TEDxCoconutGrove brings the inspiration of the TED conference to Coconut Grove and Vizcaya! Join us at the not-yet-open-to-the-public Vizcaya Village for a preview screening of some of the official TED conference videos before they get posted for the world to see!

TED 2019:
The political and technological turmoil of the past few years has had unexpected consequences: it’s causing us to ask bigger, deeper, more challenging questions. Like … where is this heading? what really matters? is there more I should be doing?

For TED in 2019, we’re joining that search for deeper meaning. We’ll be exploring technologies that evoke wonder and tantalize with superhuman powers, mind-bending science that will drive the future as significantly as any politician, the design of cities and other powerful human systems that shape our lives, awe-inspiring, mind-expanding creativity and most of all, the inspiring possibilities that happen when we ask what ideas are truly worth fighting for, worth living for.

While you’re here, take a moment to spread ideas using

Garden to Glass cocktail class
May 15 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Garden to Glass cocktail class @ Vizcaya Village | Miami | Florida | United States

100 years ago, when Vizcaya was a private home, Miami was a dry city –alcohol was prohibited.  James Deering, Vizcaya’s owner, kept a supply of liquor hidden away on the estate anyway.  Based on the inventory of that liquor, it’s safe to say that Deering had a taste for gin and one might imagine him mixing cocktails with all manner of additions from Vizcaya’s edible gardens.  Take a page from Deering’s book and indulge in some salacious history while learning how to make cocktails popular in the 1910s and 20s using ingredients from Vizcaya’s kitchen garden.

21 years and older only.
