Family Program: The Family Dinner Project
Mar 8 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Family Program: The Family Dinner Project @ Vizcaya Village | Miami | Florida | United States

Leave the fast-paced week behind you and slow down for an alfresco family experience. Enjoy a delicious meal, lawn games, an outdoor movie and great conversation with loved ones.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. so you can work up an appetite as you explore Vizcaya Village with lawn games, a mini planting workshop with Ready to Grow Gardens and more – all inspired by life at this historic estate.

At 7:00 p.m., we’ll sit down for dinner at a harvest table set for 120 in front of the Staff Residence building. You’ll get a taste of local history as we enjoy dishes based on foods originally grown on this historic farm, including our featured dish – ratatouille. This rustic French classic is served in honor of the French chef who worked 100 years ago when Vizcaya was the private home of James Deering.

Following dinner, we’ll move to the Garage Forecourt for an outdoor screening of the 2007 Disney Pixar film Ratatouille. We encourage you to bring picnic blankets and cushions to get comfy! Leave room for dessert as s’mores will be served while we watch the film.

REQUIREMENTS: Space is limited and registration is required. This is a family program designed for families with children, ages 6-12. Any adult groups who purchase tickets will be canceled and refunded. For questions, please email rebecca.peterson@vizcaya.org

F.A.Q.s

Do I need a separate ticket for a garden tour?
Yes. Free tour tickets are available on a first come, first-served basis after you’ve checked into the program at the orientation tent.

What time are tours offered?
The first tour of the night is always 6:30 p.m.  From there, we offer tours based on demand. The tour schedule is usually 7:00; 7:30, and 8:00 p.m. but that is subject to change.

How late can I arrive?
We open the gates at 6:00 p.m. and you can arrive as late as 8:00 p.m.  If you want to take a tour, we suggest you arrive no later than 7:45 p.m.

What should I wear?
While there is no dress code, Vizcaya’s pathways are often uneven gravel pathways. For that reason, we suggest comfortable footwear.  Additionally, the entire program is outside in the gardens.  Wearing (or bringing) a sweater or jacket is useful as it cools down once the sun sets.

Can I explore the Main House?
We designed this program to highlight the gardens. Parts of the Main House are accessible to members participating in the “Behind the Velvet Ropes” member-exclusive experience, but otherwise the house is not open.  Not a member? Join here!

Is there food or drinks?
Vizcaya’s Cafe and Shop are open to purchase light bites, refreshments or a glass of wine during the program.

Is there live music?
Yes! We are please to have live music on the East Terrace to listen to while enjoying the gorgeous bay views!

How come this isn’t every month?
Though we are all South Florida residents, and know how to live in South Florida weather, we suspend Gardens by Moonlight during the warmer (more humid) months.  We program something each month, though, and often the summer programs take place inside the Main House.  Keep in touch with us by subscribing to our eblasts or following us on Facebook.

Can I bring my kids?
Sure, but we do not design the Gardens by Moonlight programs for families.  If you are looking for something to do as a family, Vizcaya offers monthly family programs. Each one is different, and is designed for adults and kids to work together.  For more information, subscribe to our eblasts or follow us on Facebook.

BTVR – John Singer Sargent and Vizcaya
Mar 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
BTVR - John Singer Sargent and Vizcaya @ Vizcaya Museum & Gardens | Miami | Florida | United States

His lush canvases made him one of the most sought-after portrait painters of the 19th century.  As the painter emerged in the art world, he found patronage in many Chicagoans, including both Charles & James Deering. Join us and Annelise K. Madsen for a lively discussion where we will explore Sargent’s relationship with the Deering family as well as learn about some of Sargents Watercolors painted here at Vizcaya — on display at the Art Institute of Chicago exhibition ” John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age

After the Discussion, guests are encouraged to participate in area guiding where staff members will display images of the watercolors from the locations they were painted at.

Annelise K. Madsen is the Gilda and Henry Buchbinder Assistant Curator of American Art at the Art Institute of Chicago and author of the publication John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age .

Tickets to this event include admission to Gardens by Moonlight held simultaneously from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Check-in for the discussion will begin at 6:45 p.m. with a light refreshment to start off the night. Opening introduction will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Community Program: Seersucker Social @ Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Seersucker Social is back! Taking inspiration from the 1920s, when Vizcaya was James Deering’s private home, the museum is hosting a game night in the gardens complete with lawn bowling, yard dice, croquet and more.  Live music “jazzes” up the atmosphere and swing dancers guide you through the steps of popular dances of the era. Guests are encouraged to dress the part and get dandy by wearing their flapper dresses, seersucker jackets and other 1920s garb—because anything worth doing is worth doing right!
