Family Program: Sun Gardens
Jun 9 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Family Program: Sun Gardens @ Vizcaya Village | Miami | Florida | United States

Join the horticulture staff for a chance to design your own garden on solar photography paper! This method of botanical sun prints was pioneered by the first female photographer Anna Atkins (1799-1871) and it is her work with cyanotypes that she is best known for.

Objects, in this case leaves and flowers from Vizcaya’s Village, are placed on special paper and then it’s exposed to sunlight and washed in water, which makes the uncovered areas of the paper turning a dark blue. The process, known as blueprinting, was later used to reproduce architectural and engineering drawings, (Vizcaya has many in our archives!) but Atkins chose to use it for what is considered to be the first work with photographic illustrations, namely her Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843).

*All supplies included. Registration is required and space is limited

Processional Arts Workshop – a twilight parade
Aug 10 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Processional Arts Workshop - a twilight parade @ Vizcaya Museum and Gardens | Miami | Florida | United States

Vizcaya welcomes back New York based Processional Arts Workshop (PAW) for a fourth year! Stay tuned for more details, but get your tickets now – we sell out each year!

The performance will be built in a week-long series of public workshops. These are a hands-on opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to work closely with PAW artists Sophia Michahelles and Alex Kahn. Throughout the week, participants will create lanterns inspired and informed by Vizcaya’s rich history, guided by Michahelles and Kahn on concept and techniques, and collaborate with other participants on all aspects of production. Those who wish will also have the opportunity to perform in the culminating twilight procession.
